Combatting Eurasian Milfoil
The spread of Eurasian Milfoil and the damage it has caused to lakes throughout Quebec has led to a range of efforts to eradicate or at least contain this invasive plant. In 2020, after several years of planning, the Blue Sea Lake Watershed Association launched an experiment to control Eurasian Milfoil by covering milfoil beds in Blue Sea Lake with biodegradable jute tarps.
The project was jointly carried out with ABV des 7 and required authorization by the Quebec Ministry of the Environment and of Fauna, Flora, and Parks. Financial support was provided by the Quebec Government under its Affluent Maritime Program, the municipalities of Blue Sea and Messines, and by the generous donations of members of the Association.
The Jute Tarp Project is a multi-year project which will be carried out according to the following timetable:
